Rubio Questions Demings on ‘non-Citizens’ Voting

Last week, New York voters approved a measure that would allow non-citizens to vote in local elections. If the legislation is not vetoed, or if the Mayor doesn’t sign it into law before then, it will become law within 30 days of being voted on.

Moreover, it applies to 800,000 non-citizens. In light of this, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) is questioning whether or not the same initiative could be brought to the Sunshine State, and he’s warning that Florida Rep. Val Demings (D) could support the measure.

In a message released to supporters, the Rubio campaign questions, “does Val Demings believe Congress should make voting legal for people who aren’t citizens?”

Explaining why Demings might agree with the effort, the Rubio campaign explains that “Demings has supported many of the policies that solid blue states like New York have enacted, from abortion up until birth to stripping Americans of their Second Amendment rights,” adding that “earlier this year, Demings voted for H.R. 1, which would overturn voter ID laws, publicly fund campaigns, permit same-day voter registration and expand voting by mail.”

Elizabeth Gregory, the communications director for Marco Rubio for Senate, warned that Demings if elected to the Senate in the 2022 midterm election, would most likely support the effort.

“Val Demings supports liberal voting laws that would radically diminish the integrity of our elections,” Gregory said, commenting that “Blue New York’s move to allow noncitizens to participate in their elections begs the question: Does Demings want to give this right to noncitizens nationwide?”

In turn, Gregory affirmed that “Floridians deserve to know whether she’d introduce legislation to enable noncitizens to vote.”

Since announcing her intention to run, Senator Rubio has criticized the former Orlando police chief, arguing that she supports “socialist” policies.

The Florida Democrat most recently made a campaign stop at a Cuban Café to discuss the Latino vote.
