Mucarsel-Powell Highlights "Environmental Racism" in FL

With the election under a week away, Democrats across the state of Florida are making the final push to keep the House, turn the Senate and win the presidency on November 3^rd by turning the sunshine state blue.

In an effort to ensure this, the well-funded group, Democratic Majority for Israel (DMI), which is a Super PAC founded to support pro-Israel Democrats running for federal office, held a GOTV event where Florida Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was to attend and participate in the group’s efforts to get Joe Biden and other Democratic candidates elected on November 3^rd.

Rep. Mucarsel-Powell commented on how “environmental racism” has affected her district during the COVID-19 pandemic, commenting that “we have lost in Florida over 16,000 lives, and of course over 16,000 who have succumbed to this deadly pandemic, the number continues to grow because of politicians like President Donald Trump and my opponent Carlos Gimenez, who continued to downplay this crisis.”

The Florida lawmaker explained that “the pandemic is taking a disproportionate toll on communities of color like right here in Florida’s 26 district,” adding that “we can’t talk about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people of color without recognizing the impact that environmental racism and climate change have had in our communities.”

She detailed that “the high asthma rates in our communities of color here specifically for Latino communities… is a top Covid comorbidity and we also know that decades of environmental injustices have contributed to these high rates of respiratory illnesses among Latinos, especially children.”

According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, with a population of 728,285, the Hispanic ethnicity is the highest population in the district with 69.5%, so it's natural for the virus to be affecting Hispanics more than others in her district.

 Mucarsel-Powell is currently running a congressional reelection bid against Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez after turning her district blue in the 2018 midterm elections.
