AOC Walks Back on "12 Years" Comment

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) divided many with her Green New Deal, but that same division was reduced to a one-sided rejection as 57-0 voted against the plan in the Senate.

With her claim that the world would end in 12 years if lawmakers don’t adequately respond to the concern of climate change, she was both praised and criticized. However, now, the freshman New York rep. is walking back on her comment, saying that anyone who believed the argument has the intelligence of a “sea sponge.”

Slamming Republicans, Ocasio-Cortez expressed that Republicans have a bad habit of mischaracterizing her dry humor in trying to “fact check” her every joke.

Instead of understanding the humor, she stated that Republicans take things too literal.

In January, she claims that this happened when she stated that the world would end in 12 years, comparing the climate change battle to a modern struggle the likes of World War 2.

Ocasio-Cortez explained that “the ‘world ending in 12 years’ thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal. But the GOP is basically Dwight from the Office so who knows.”

She further described that “I think that the part of it that is generational is that millennials and Gen-Z and all these folks that come after us are looking up and we’re like, ‘the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change,’ and your biggest issue is ‘how are we going to pay for it?’”

Finally, she concluded that “this is our World War 2.”

Though her comments are likely to draw responses from lawmakers, this election season has been marked by environmental concerns, the Mueller report controversy and pop culture references seeing that President Donald Trump called 2020 Presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) Alfred E. Neuman last week, but the Mayor “had to Google that.”
