Rep. Waltz Downplays Pelosi's "Constitutional Crisis"

Share

Over the weekend, Florida freshman rep. Michael Waltz (R) was a guest on Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union to share his thoughts on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D) recent comments that the United States is experiencing a “constitutional crisis” when it comes to subpoenas aimed at the Trump administration over the Special Counsel’s report, impeachment and possible Russian interference in American elections.

When the Special Counsel’s report was delivered, it was also announced that there would be no further indictments and that there had been no Russian collusion. However, Democrats maintain that there was, and they have even called for Robert Mueller to testify in front of a committee. Since then, the report has become a controversial subject.

2020 Presidential candidate Kamala Harris (D) agrees with Speaker Pelosi that the country is currently experiencing a constitutional crisis. Speaking to Jake Tapper, Harris explained that “a constitutional crisis is generally when the system we set up with checks and balances, when each of the independent co-equal branches of government, fails to perform its duties and I think we’re seeing the breakdown of responsibilities.”

Harris further explained that “being a member of the U.S. Congress and Senate, I’m seeing up close where there is a failure to respect the significance of Congress’ duty to perform a role of oversight over the administration, over the agencies. I’m seeing the failure to appreciate the importance of testifying before Congress in a way that is straight forward and truthful, so yes I think it’s fair to say that we’re looking at a crisis not only of confidence but potentially, a constitutional crisis.”

In response to the comments from Democratic leadership, Waltz downplayed the alarms raised by the Democrats, expressing that he “just spent two weeks at home in North Florida. No one is talking impeachment.”

Waltz added that “they are talking healthcare, they are talking infrastructure – they’re talking these big national security issues and they’re frustrated that once again, it’s such a bubble here that everybody is at loggerheads and not dealing with the issues they want dealt with.”
