Trump says new trade deal forces Mexico to pay for "wall"

Share

With a government shutdown looming over funding border security, will Republicans and Democrats come to terms, and avoid the dreaded shut down?

Congressional Democrats have been waging war against Republicans and President Trump over the funding of the border wall, citing the president’s 2016 campaign promise that he would have Mexico pay for the wall.

Just last week, both House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate  Minority Leader Chuck Schumer openly tangled with the president in the Oval Office over funding "The Wall."

Trump still contends that Mexico will pay for the wall, pointing to the new USMCA trade deal that replaces the “anti-USA NAFTA,” as the vehicle in which Mexico will pay for the wall.

During President George W. Bush’s second term in office, the U.S. Congress came together to draft the bipartisan 2006 Secure Fence Act, which Bush later signed into law. The law called for 700 miles of fencing.

Senate Democrats, including future President Barack Obama, future presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, and current Senate Minority Leader Schumer, were among the 80 senators who voted in favor of building a fence or wall.

Here then-Senator Barack Obama took to the Senate floor to express his thoughts on border security:
