U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL) released a campaign ad labeling Democratic challenger Angie Nixon as a socialist while attacking the ideology's far-left platform as the pair compete in Florida's Senate special election in November.
The 30-second ad was shared by Sen. Moody on social media.
"Angie Nixon is actually a socialist," the ad says before showing a clip of Rep. Nixon (D-Jacksonville) saying she joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). It also clips Nixon saying "it's about the issues" in apparent reference to the DSA's views.Â
Rep. Nixon joined the DSA in June.
The ad goes on to criticize the DSA for its platform.
"Here's where socialists actually stand on the issues: abolish police, empty prisons, defund the military and seize every farm, power company, and doctor's office. Angie Nixon actually signed up for that," the ad says.Â
The DSA's platform also calls for open borders and expanding voting rights to include non-citizens.
Sen. Moody contrasted the message as freedom or socialism, saying that's "not complicated" in the ads closing. Moody has been in the Senate since being appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2025.
Nixon is challenging Moody after securing an upset victory over Alexander Vindman in the Democratic primary in August. A vocal progressive Democrat, Nixon has represented District 13 in the Florida House of Representatives since 2020.
She is looking to become the first elected Democrat to Florida's U.S. Senate since Bill Nelson in 2012. Nelson lost his re-election bid to Republican Rick Scott in 2018.
Nixon is also not hiding her association. The 42-year-old was endorsed by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a fellow DSA member, earlier this month.
She also has been endorsed by other well-known progressive Democrats, including U.S. Reps. Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren.
The general election is Nov. 3.
