Friends of Byron Donalds, a political committee supporting Rep. Donalds' campaign released an ad this week showing the gubernatorial hopeful playing some pick-up basketball with his three sons before taking a timeout to discuss his plans if elected governor in November.
"My boys deserve the same shot I got, but Florida's pricing out our future," Donalds said.
The 30-second ad, titled "Game Time," shows the sons get a bit impatient by the pause, with one asking, "Are we going to play yet?" and another saying "Here we go again" by Rep. Donalds' pause.
"Cut property taxes, lower insurance rates, and slash the cost of housing," Donalds said.
Another son then asks Rep. Donalds to shoot, prompting the gubernatorial candidate to shoot and make a Stephen Curry-style basket from long range. Curry is arguably one of the best shooters in NBA history with records for most 3-pointers made in a single season (402) and career (4248) over his 17 professional seasons.
Notably, Rep. Donalds played high school basketball at Nazareth High School in Brookyln in the 1990s. He also played baseball and soccer at the school before studying at Florida A&M and Florida State University.
Donalds did not play in college.
And while Rep. Donalds might not be Steph Curry, the Republican left room for some common trash talk to his kids.
"You guys are going down. Just like prices," Donalds said before the make.
The light-hearted ad also carries some similar traits. Donalds' son, Darin Donalds, played basketball at First Baptist Academy in Naples before playing for Truman State (Missouri) as a freshman during the 2025-26 season.

Now, his father is hoping to score a big victory in November. But first, Donalds is in a Republican primary with Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and businessman James Fishback.
The primary is Aug. 18, with the general election on Nov. 3.
