By Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08)
A year ago today, I stood on the House Floor and cast one of the most consequential votes of my career.
When the Working Families Tax Cuts passed in the early morning hours—with the landmark No-Tax-On Tips provision at its heart—I thought of every bartender, server, waitress, and delivery driver who had spent decades watching their hard-earned gratuities disappear to Uncle Sam. Today, I can say without hesitation, that millions of hardworking Americans in my district and across the United States are taking home bigger paychecks because of that vote.
On the campaign trail, President Trump and Republicans promised to deliver tax relief for hardworking Americans. One year later, that promise is a reality. Since the Working Families Tax Cuts became law, American workers have claimed $82 billion in individual relief, with more than 7.5 million Americans claiming No Tax on Tips. In another promise kept to the working men and women in this country, recent treasury data shows that 90% of taxpayers claiming the No Tax on Tips deduction earn less than $100,000 annually.
While millions of everyday Americans are building a stronger financial future because of this historic relief, we cannot overlook the fact that every single Democrat in Congress voted against the very legislation that delivered these results.
In my district alone, I have heard from countless restaurant workers who used the larger tax refunds and the No Tax on Tips deductions to pay off debt, build their emergency funds, or finally start contributing to their retirement savings accounts.
Every Democrat voted against that relief.
Through passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts, President Trump and Republicans in Congress are delivering on our promise to put American workers first—boosting take-home pay, delivering bigger refunds, and reversing the Biden-era economic decline that crushed families in states like mine.
Americans deserve to keep more of what they earn, and under President Trump and Republican Congressional leadership, they finally are.
When I cast my vote for the Working Families Tax Cuts one year ago, I knew we were stopping the largest tax hike in history. Tomorrow, as our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, No Tax on Tips stands as proof that the principles of limited government and lower taxes that shaped our founding will continue to preserve the American dream.
