Florida Congressman Carlos Gimenez (R) called out Mexican President Claudia Shienbaum Pardo and the Mexican government for sending oil to Cuba.
Rep. Gimenez said that Mexico is considering ending its oil agreement with Cuba, but the Congressman wants that process expedited, calling Mexico “afraid” of a U.S. response in the form of new trade deals. The Trump administration has previously sent letters to the Mexican government regarding their Cuban oil exchange agreement.
“They're considering stopping the shipment. I want those shipments to stop. Period. And I think they're doing that because we've sent letters to the administration saying that they've been doing this. They're helping the Castro regime. That should be something that we consider, as we negotiate a new trade agreement,” Gimenez shared in a video on X. “I think the Mexican government is afraid of that.”
Gimenez reiterated that he doesn’t want the Mexican government to merely think he considers wanting the oil exchange to stop, but that he demands it end now.
“I'll be seeing President Sheinbaum in Mexico, and I'll be reiterating that we want those shipments stopped because they are supporting a murderous regime, a communist regime that doesn't believe in democracy that's been oppressing its people for 65 years,” he continued.
The Florida Congressman ended his statement questioning Mexico's reason for even supporting the Cuban Communist regime and asking if the resources sent to Cuba would be better spent on the people of Mexico.
“So why in the world are you helping that regime, by the way, that free oil or subsidized oil that you're sending to Cuba that could be used?," Gimenez questioned. "It could have a great effect for the people of Mexico themselves and the security of Mexico also. So yeah, while I'm glad that they're retiring their envoy, and they're thinking about stopping the oil. It's not good enough. They need to stop the oil shipment.”
