The longest government shutdown in American history has finally come to an end with a House vote on the new continuing resolution (CR), passed by the Senate. The final vote was 222 in favor and 209 against, with six Democrats voting yea alongside Republicans. Notably, two Republicans voted nay, along with 207 Democrats.
President Donald Trump quickly signed the new continuing resolution into law, addressing the American people. "I just want to tell the American people, you should not forget this. When we come up to midterms and other things, don't forget what they've done to our country," he addressed.
"Senate Democrats kept the government closed for six weeks while families, service members, and federal workers paid the price," said Representative Scott Franklin (R-FL) in a statement. "They made Americans suffer as part of their strategy for political leverage, yet in the end they achieved nothing."
Similarly, Representative Laurel Lee (R-FL) praised that "The House once again acted to keep the government open — just as we did in September when we first passed a temporary funding bill." "Instead of doing the right thing, Senate Democrats hurt families, servicemembers, and federal workers across the country by voting against the same temporary funding bill to shut the government down for over 40 days," she continued, adding that "Floridians expect steady leadership, not manufactured crises."
Representative Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) also weighed in on the vote, suggesting that keeping the government shutdown was "never about serious policy negotiations; it was a power ploy that fortunately failed."
