Perez was designated as speaker of the Florida House in September 2023. He will replace House Speaker Paul Renner, who served from 2022 to 2024.
Currently, Perez represents the 116th House District in Miami-Dade County. The area covers part of Miami-Dade County, including Sweetwater.
Perez has served HD 116 since 2017. On Tuesday, he retained his seat by defeating Democratic candidate Nicolas Ramos with 69% of the vote.
He also defeated Democratic opponents by wide margins in three other elections. Notably, the 2022 HD 116 general election was cancelled.
As House Speaker-designate, Perez issued a statement on Tuesday after a successful election night for the chamber.
"Tonight, Floridians have returned a historic Republican supermajority to the Florida House of Representatives. Our members, our candidates, and our team at House Campaigns pulled together to bring our conservative message to the voters," Perez said.
He also congratulated former President Donald Trump on being elected 47th president of the United States. Trump also won Miami-Dade County by 11 points, a first for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988.
Congratulations, @realDonaldTrump – the first full-time Florida resident to be elected President. He will restore our country to greatness and will shut down the Federal bureaucrats who micromanage the States and who care more about virtue signaling than creating jobs," Perez said.
