Amid El Salvador's offensive campaign against Haitian gangs following the hostage takeover of the nation's personnel, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) commended Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele for his efforts.

"Haiti has become a failed state," Congresswoman Luna wrote on X. "The civilians in Haiti are currently being butchered. The gangs currently in power have acted overtly in aggression against the government of El Salvador by kidnapping 4 El Salvadorians delivering aid."

"[President Bukele] has secured El Salvador from violent criminals before. It’s time he does it again."

Congresswoman Luna's praise comes after President Bukele announced the deployment of up to 2,000 soldiers into the Caribbean nation following a Haitian gang ambush on an armored vehicle carrying four Salvadoran aviation technicians.

"This is not an operation against the Haitian people, nor an invasion of the country of Haiti," Bukele affirmed on X, in Haitian Creole. "We came to Haiti to fight against the wicked."

The Lead-Up To The Campaign

On Oct. 18, 2026,  Haitian gang members kidnapped the United Nations (UN)-established Gang Suppression Force (GSF) personnel while the group was reportedly off-guard, returning from buying food at a market.

On Oct. 20, 2026, the GSF and Haiti's national police launched an attack that killed several gang members in the Haitian commune of Croix-des-Bouquets as they searched for the hostages.

The following day, President Bukele issued a stark warning to the gang members: "today's attack is nothing compared to what is coming if we do not get all four hostages back alive."

"And do not take our word for empty threats. We have already finished with the gangs in El Salvador, and we can finish with you too," Bukele asserted.

Trump Gives The Green Light

On Oct. 27, 2026, the day before Bukele's deployments, the Salvadoran leader contacted President Donald Trump to ensure the U.S. did not oppose the campaign.

According to sources familiar with the matter, President Trump told Bukele: "Do what you have to do."
