WASHINGTON, D.C.—Just as President Donald Trump announced that he was considering suspending the current federal fuel tax, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives could be on the verge of voting on a legislative measure to suspend the gas tax until the end of 2026.
During an interview with The Floridian, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) divulged that she had already file a bill, The American Gas Tax" bill, that may have been killed before it could be voted on on the floor of the House of Representatives.
“Harris is fighting for that right now. We might be voting on that this week," said Rep. Luna about a similar gas tax cutting bill that Rep. Andy Harris has also recently introduced. “I had a bill for that. It’s the American Gas Tax…. I filed that like right when President Trump initially talked about that.”
Rep. Luna asserted that Big Gas may have had a hand in sinking her gas cutting legislation.
“But, they didn’t put it on the floor, and I think they didn’t put it on the floor probably because of the gas companies. But, I mean, we wanted to codify that and do it before the midterms," Luna added. "And I said, ‘hey look until this comes back down and until this neutralizes out, why the hell are we paying so much because really the cream is going right to the companies.’”
Luna added, “I think right now, you have to be pretty dense, not to support it.”
Republican congressional candidate Casey Askar recently announced that he would file a bill to cut both the gas and diesel consumption taxes, when he is sworn into office early next year.
