After being named after President Ronald Reagan and recently expressing admiration for current U.S. President Donald Trump, could Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro, arguably the world’s greatest Fútbol player, be interested in jumping into politics?
"My parents named me after him because they both liked the name and thought it sounded strong. I know my father admired him,” said Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, who recently participated in his 6th World Cup tournament and is nearing 1,000 goals scored, is considered by many fútbol aficionados and fans to be the greatest player of all time.
On a personal note, I had the privilege of attending several of the 2026 World Cup matches in Miami, including the match between Portugal and Colombia.
While my parents are of Colombian descent, I was rooting for Ronaldo to continue his success in finding the back of the net. After all, his style of play and position on the field mirror how I played many, many moons ago.
From what we have seen of Ronaldo, it appears as if the soon-to-be-married father of 5 children is running a very tight, conservative-minded family household.
Ronaldo, who comes from a very poor and humble household, hasn’t insinuated or hinted that he is interested in politics, let alone considering a run for elected office, but my Spidey senses tell me that Ronaldo’s secretive political leanings would align with those of Presidents Reagan and Trump.
In other words, Cristiano Ronaldo is probably “MAGA,” or is MPGA (Make Portugal Great Again).
Well, maybe he is not completely aligned with “MAGA,” but he certainly has a heavy, obvious conservative streak about him.
Ronaldo has it all. He has fame, fortune, and family, and he has shown his compassion for his fans and likes to give back to his community.
So why would he even consider running for elected office?
"I wish one day to meet him to sit with him because he's really good. He's one of the persons that I really like him because I think it can make things happen and I like people like that," said Ronaldo about President Trump in an interview with Piers Morgan.
Wait, did Ronaldo drop a hint about maybe seeking public office?
During a 2025 visit to the White House, where he and his fianće Georgina Rodriguez spoke to President Trump, Ronaldo sounded like an aspiring politician.
"Thank you Mr. President for your invitation and for the warm welcome you and the First Lady gave me and my future wife, @georginagio. Each of us has something meaningful to give, and I stand ready to do my part as we inspire new generations to build a future defined by courage, responsibility and lasting peace,” stated Ronaldo.
So, why not explore a run for office?
Could you see Ronaldo as the mayor of Funchal, the Portuguese city where he is from?
Or, could the role of President of Portugal be in the cards?
Whatever office Ronaldo runs for (if he runs for office) he would win.
I personally can see President Ronaldo in the not-so-distant future.
While I obviously didn’t reach the fútbol play heights Ronaldo achieved, the little kid inside of me still dreams of match day greatness.
I can only dream considering all of the orthopaedic challenges I have faced over the years, but that doesn’t stop me from lacing up my boots and going out an pulling a hamstring or calf muscles.
Someone needs to try to convince me about hanging up the boots.
