The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF) announced they've filed a motion this week in defense of Florida's SAVE Act through multiple releases this week.
The SAVE Act, or HB 991, would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in the state and keep noncitizens off voter rolls.
The RNC and RPOF's motion follows lawsuits by UnidosUS, the Florida NAACP, and other groups challenging the proof of U.S. citizenship requirement to vote. Both the RNC and RPOF argue the SAVE Act would "preserve election integrity, maintain accurate voter rolls, and ensure that only eligible citizens participate in Florida elections."
“Democrats are once again attacking commonsense election safeguards that more than 80% of Americans support,” RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said in a statement. “The RNC is intervening to defend Florida’s proof-of-citizenship law, protect the voter rolls, and stop yet another attempt by Democrats to cheat in our elections."
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida's SAVE act, modeled after the federal Safeguard American Voter Eligibility [SAVE] America Act, in April. The bill was initially passed in the Florida Senate 27-12 and the Florida House 77-28 in March.
Rep Jenna Persons-Mulicka (R-Fort Myers) sponsored the bill in the House, while Sen. Erin Grall (R-Fort Pierce) championed the bill in the Senate.
“Florida’s SAVE Act is a commonsense law that helps ensure only eligible U.S. citizens are registering to vote,” Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power said in a release. “Floridians deserve confidence that every legal vote is counted and that our elections are protected from unlawful voting. The Florida GOP is proud to stand alongside the RNC in defending this law and will continue fighting to protect the integrity of our elections and the rights of every eligible voter.”
