First Lady Casey DeSantis announced a new program focused on connecting Florida seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities with local churches as part of Hope Florida’s CarePortal through a press release this week.
The initiative aims to create more opportunities for churches to provide companionship and support to seniors in the community.
“Every senior deserves to know they matter and are loved,” DeSantis said in a release. “Every life is filled with a lifetime of wisdom, experiences, and stories that have helped shape families and communities across our state. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply our presence—taking the time to listen, to remind someone that they matter. No one should ever feel forgotten, and no one should have to walk through life’s final chapters without knowing there are people who care.”
Hope Florida's CarePortal is set to launch in Leon County, Hillsborough County and Miami-Dade County before expanding to other areas in the state. Participating nursing homes and assisted living centers will be able to share opportunities with local churches by delivering flowers, celebrating a birthday, reading, playing cards, or sharing a meal with as senior looking for quality time.
“Every senior has a lifetime of wisdom and experiences worth sharing. Taking the time to listen is more than an act of kindness,” DeSantis added. “It honors a life well lived and reminds us that meaningful human connection enriches everyone involved.”
First Lady DeSantis founded Hope Florida in 2021. The initiative aims to help Floridians out of government assistance and into economic success, as well as with other needs, by connecting individuals to private sector and non-profit resources, including churches and other faith-based organizations for better care.
“This is another shining example of this administration’s commitment to ensuring Floridians—especially seniors and vulnerable individuals—are supported in ways that improve quality of life and overall well-being,” Heath Care Administration Secretary Shevaun Harris added. “We are so grateful for the leadership of First Lady Casey DeSantis in spearheading this effort that will support partnership among long-term care facilities and faith institutions in meeting residents’ needs.”
