It has been an eventful and historic week for the U.S. so far this summer.
Amid the lead-up to the 250th U.S. birthday, several historic achievements have taken place across the country, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the NBA Finals, National Flag Day, President Donald Trump's birthday, and UFC Freedom 250.
U.S. Makes History During 2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup began on June 11, marking the second time the U.S. hosts the Men’s competition, this time co-hosting with Canada and Mexico.
In 1994, the U.S. also made history by hosting the FIFA World Cup not only for the first time, but also by drawing the most attendees in FIFA history.
On June 12, the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) played the first match in the U.S. for the competition, defeating Paraguay 4-1.
According to ESPN, the USMNT’s four goals are the most they’ve scored in a World Cup match.
NY Knicks Win NBA Championship For The First Time in 53 Years
On June 13, the New York Knicks won their first NBA Finals Championship since 1973. Playing against Texas’ San Antonio Spurs, the Knicks defeated the Spurs in Game 5 of the Championship 94-90.
Prior to the 2026 win, the New York Knicks’ last NBA Finals appearance was in 1999, coincidentally also alongside San Antonio.
National Flag Day
On June 14, the U.S. celebrated National Flag Day to commemorate the banner’s inception.
From Key Largo to Key West, fire stations along the region displayed the flags in “one of the most expansive National Flag Day displays in South Florida,” according to WPLG 10.
UFC Freedom 250
Additionally, the White House hosted the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for the UFC Freedom 250, not only to celebrate the U.S.’s 250th anniversary but also President Trump’s 80th birthday.
American fighter Justin Gaethje defeated Ilia Topuria in the lightweight championship in “one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport,” according to UFC commentator Joe Rogan. Gathje broke Topuria’s previous 17-0 professional record
“The weather was scheduled to be horrendous, and it turned out to be PERFECT!” Trump wrote on Truth Social following the event. “One of the most exciting days in the History of our fabled White House!”
