The Volusia County Deputies Association (VCDA) IUPA Local 6035 announced its endorsement of Lt. Gov. Jay Collins for Florida governor in a statement released this week.
"Throughout this election cycle, Lt. Governor Jay Collins’ steady, solutions-focused approach to the challenges facing our communities has stood out,” Volusia County Deputies Association President Sean Gowan said.
“His willingness to examine complex issues, listen to the concerns of the public, and engage with stakeholders in a thoughtful and constructive manner reflects the type of leadership many in our profession believe is essential," Gowan added. "Jay’s record of service to both our country and our state, combined with his demonstrated support for public safety, has been cited by many as evidence of the qualities they look for in a candidate for Governor."
The VCDA is a fraternal organization representing the sheriffs of Volusia County, located in east-central Florida. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood endorsed Lt. Gov. Collins for governor in March.
Lt. Gov. Collins thanked the VCDA for its endorsement.
“I’m grateful to have the endorsement of the Volusia County Deputies Association,” Collins said. “I don’t take their support lightly. There is too much at stake. We can’t afford to elect a governor who will back down when things are tough or when our law enforcement is under attack."
"I’ve stood by Governor Ron DeSantis to keep Florida a law and order state where our law enforcement officers get the respect and resources they deserve," Collins continued. "The deputies in Volusia County wake up each and every day and choose to do the hard right over the easy wrong. That’s why I will always have their backs.”
Santa Rose County Sheriff Bob Johnson, Taylor County Sheriff Wayne Padgett, Volusia County, and Interim Osceola County Sheriff Christopher Blackmon have also endorsed Lt. Gov. Collins in the gubernatorial race.
Collins is in a Republican primary with U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and businessman James Fishback.
The primary is Aug. 18.
