President Donald Trump has let go of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem after immense pressure and backlash over her leadership of the agency and the management of the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) released a statement on X, thanking Noem for her work as DHS Secretary and assuring that her replacement, Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin (R), would continue to implement the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

“President Trump was elected to secure our border, crack down on sanctuary cities, and keep our country safe," Senator Scott expressed on social media. "I appreciate [Kristi Noem’s] dedication to that mission. Thanks to the president’s leadership and her help, incredible progress has been made, and I know she will do a fantastic job as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas.”

“[Senator Mullin] will do great work continuing this effort and be a strong leader at DHS, and he needs every resource available to get this important job done. It’s time to end the shutdown and fund DHS NOW!,” he concluded.

In contrast, Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) criticized the outgoing secretary.

“Kristi Noem failed America. But nothing has changed. [Trump] picked another loyalist who will subject our communities to the same cruelty & mismanagement as she did. I’ll be clear: We’ll keep fighting for real reform, so that DHS, through ICE, can’t keep terrorizing our communities,” she shared on X.

Florida Congresswoman Lois Frankel (D) also weighed in on the firing, heavily criticizing Noem’s performance and claiming that her firing was “One of Trump's few decisions I can fully agree with.” “Under the direction of Kristi Noem, ICE has become an abomination, brutalizing and killing American citizens, terrorizing communities, and completely disregarding the rule of law. Her firing was long overdue,” Frankel added.

Markwayne Mullin (R) is set to take over as DHS Secretary starting March 31, 2026.
