Democrat Rob Long routed Republican challenger Maria Zack with 63% of the vote to win the House District 90 Special election this week. Zack received 36% of the vote, while independent candidate Karen Yeh earned 1% in the race.
"Congratulations to Rob Long for winning the Florida House in District 90," the Florida Democratic Party wrote. "Palm Beach is in good hands and will be well represented by Rob as he joins our caucus to focus on making Florida more affordable for working-class people!"
HD 90 covers portions of coastal Palm Beach County, including Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Ocean Ridge, Gulf Stream, and Briny Breezes. Long fills the seat of Democrat Rep. Joe Casello, who passed away in July.
Long has been on the Delray Beach City Commission since 2023. Casello, who was term-limited, endorsed Long for the seat in February before his passing.
During his time on the commission, Long prioritized public safety, sustainable development, environmental initiatives, and government transparency. He also pushed for competitive wages for first responders.
Long's plans in his new House seat include boosting economic growth, assisting small businesses, investing in education, and supporting conservation efforts. He also intends to bring additional state funding to Palm Beach County.
He will stay in the seat until at least next November if he seeks reelection.
Senate Minority Leader Lori Berman (D-Boca Raton) endorsed Long in the months ahead of the election, along with Sen. Tina Polsky (D-Boca Raton), Rep. Jervonte "Tae" Edmonds (D-West Palm Beach), Rep. Kelly Skidmore (D-Boca Raton), Rep. Debra Tendrich (D-Lake Worth), and more.
Zack is the founder of The Strollo Group, a consulting firm with clients such as Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. She is also a longtime lobbyist with a background in government affairs, business, and community programs.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich endorsed her for the seat, along with Florida Right to Life.
