Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) applauded American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla for their efforts to shift parts production and supply to the U.S. from China.

“This is the right move by Tesla. Communist China cannot be trusted, and the faster we get them out of our supply chains, the better!” Sen. Scott shared in a post on X.

Tesla has recently ordered its parts suppliers to ban the use of China-made components in the manufacturing of its cars in the U.S. This shift marks a deepening of the geopolitical and trade tensions that have been brewing between the U.S. and Beijing.

Ever since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tesla had begun sourcing its components from other countries, as China’s lockdowns had crucially disrupted the flow of goods and resources needed.

In 2025, President Donald Trump’s heavy tariff policies had shifted the pendulum fully away from Chinese manufacturing for Tesla, as the company rapidly sought to shift parts production and supply to America.

Tesla marks the second auto manufacturer to commit to shifting full production away from China, the first being General Motors.

Senator Scott was also a vocal supporter of GM’s plans to shift production stateside, calling Chinese production “a BAD IDEA.”

“Glad GM is seeing the writing on the wall—Communist China is our enemy and doing business with them is a BAD IDEA,” Scott shared in a post on X. “I’ve been pushing for companies to cut ties with the CCP for years. I encourage every manufacturer to follow GM’s lead.”

Both automakers wish to seek independence from Chinese production primarily for the making of EV parts and components, with GM entering a partnership with U.S.-based Rare Earth Company and investing in a lithium mine in Nevada for future electric vehicle battery materials, moving reliance away from foreign mines and back to the U.S.
