Florida Congressman Greg Steube (R) is calling for the resignation or expulsion of Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D) after she allegedly defrauded FEMA for $5 million dollars.
“When hurricanes strike, Floridians rely on FEMA relief to get back on their feet. The idea that a Florida member of Congress would steal $5 million in FEMA funds for herself is as unconscionable as it is unlawful. If Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick won’t resign, the House must take up my resolution to expel her,” Steube shared on X.
The Congressman appeared in an interview with NEWSMAX, where he accused McCormick of using race to argue that investigators are targeting her as they examine the theft allegations.
“Of course she has to use race as an issue. Why? She's, quote unquote, being targeted when she committed $5 million in FEMA fraud. She's been charged with over 15 felonious counts. You have 53 years of prison time she will get if she's found guilty of this,” he remarked.
Steube also pointed out how Florida relies on FEMA for hurricane relief aid and the appalling nature that a Florida politician would steal from their own relief fund.
“You have a Florida congresswoman taking FEMA aid from their constituents at a time we had six hurricanes in two years in my district, and you're going to go and try to take and defraud the American people from FEMA?,” he questioned.
The DOJ stated that McCormick and her brother worked through their family health-care company, Trinity Healthcare Services, on a FEMA backed COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract in 2021.
Allegations claim that in July 2021, Trinity Healthcare Services received a $5 million overpayment in FEMA funds and used that money to fuel her 2021 campaign.
McCormick’s legal team released a statement saying she “is a committed public servant dedicated to her constituents,” affirming that “we will fight to clear her good name.”
