Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) is throwing his support behind Miami mayoral candidate and fellow Cuban Emilio Gonzalez in his election bid. The senator's backing is arguably the highest-profile out-of-state endorsement for Gonzalez as he looks to take over Florida's second-largest city from Mayor Francis Suarez after the race concludes in just three weeks.
“It is an honor to endorse my dear friend and fellow Cuban-American, Emilio Gonzalez, for mayor of Miami," Cruz wrote in a statement. As the son of a Cuban immigrant who fled communism, I know what freedom means to families like ours — and Emilio embodies that same spirit of sacrifice, resilience, and love of country."
Cruz also praised Gonzalez for his "commitment to service and liberty for his support" in his support.
"A decorated Army colonel with decades of service in intelligence and diplomacy, he understands what it means to fight for liberty both abroad and here at home," Cruz added. "Miami deserves a leader who will honor its proud Cuban-American story and defend the values that make this city and this nation great. "I’m proud to stand with Emilio in that fight."
Gonzalez, who's running against twelve other candidates in the race, thanked Sen. Cruz for his endorsement.
“I am deeply honored by Senator Cruz’s endorsement. Our families’ journeys are woven into the fabric of this city — from exile to opportunity, " Gonzalez said. "But endorsements are words until they are matched with action. I will earn every vote by delivering real results: accountability in government, safety in every neighborhood, and opportunity for every child in Miami."
Cruz's backing comes after two other high-profile endorsements for Gonzalez in his mayoral bid.
Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott endorsed him last week, while Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed him last month. President Donald Trump has yet to throw his support behind anyone in the race.
The Miami mayoral election is on Nov. 4.
