Gov. Ron DeSantis praised the Lake County Commission this week for approving the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway in honor of the late conservative activist. Kirk was assassinated while speaking at a campus event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
"Lake County’s dedication of the highway represents the first county to memorialize Kirk in the aftermath of his assassination," DeSantis shared on social media.
According to Governor DeSantis, the highway is a section of Wellness Way from US 27 to the Orange County line. Lake County is located to the east of Orange County in the central part of Florida.
The dedication follows a series of steps to honor Kirk, whose conservative ideas captured the minds of students on high school and college campuses across the United States. Kirk's centerpiece for his platform, Turning Point USA, has 7.2 million followers on Instagram and 1.4 million followers on X.
Kirk also has 13.8 million followers on his personal Instagram account and 6.1 million followers on X.
In September, New College of Florida commissioned a statue to honor Kirk's memory on its campus. New College is located in Sarasota.
U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis (R-FL), along with Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R), introduced separate resolutions in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate for a National Day of Remembrance of Kirk on Oct. 14th.
Kirk's birthday is also on Oct. 14th. He would have turned 32.
Another Florida lawmaker, Rep. Juan Porras (R-Miami), filed a bill in the Florida Legislature to designate an avenue near Florida International University in Kirk's name. Both Porras and Kirk founded the first Turning Point USA chapter in Florida back in 2015.
The 22-year-old gunman accused of Kirk's assassination has been charged with several felony charges, including aggravated murder, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors also plan on seeking the death penalty in the case.
