Florida leaders are enthusiastically endorsing Republican George Moraitis in his campaign for a congressional seat. Moraitis, born in Fort Lauderdale, served in the Navy and attained the rank of lieutenant commander. He previously served as a state representative from 2010 to 2018.

U.S. Rep. Greg Steube is among his supporters. “As a fellow veteran, conservative and public servant, I am honored to endorse George Moraitis for Congress in Florida’s 23rd District,” Steube shared in a statement.

The district includes Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Margate, Coconut Creek, Oakland Park, Parkland, Wilton Manors, Lighthouse Point, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Highland Beach.

While the area has historically leaned Democratic, Moraitis is gaining favor with local officials as the region trends more conservative.

Moraitis’ supporters include:

  • Steve Arnst, vice mayor of Oakland Park
  • Walter Blake, former Coral Springs mayor and commissioner
  • John Brodie, Coconut Creek commissioner
  • Audrey Fesik, Pompano Beach commissioner
  • John Herbst, vice mayor of Fort Lauderdale
  • Marsha Linville, former mayor and commissioner of Lighthouse Point
  • Andrea McGee, former Pompano Beach commissioner
  • Joe McHugh, Coral Springs commissioner
  • Edmund Malkoon, mayor of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
  • Heather Moraitis, former Fort Lauderdale commissioner
  • Theo Poulopoulos, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea commissioner
  • Bruce Roberts, former Fort Lauderdale commissioner and police chief
  • Abby Stafford, Lighthouse Point commissioner
  • Bill Sullivan, former mayor and commissioner of Lighthouse Point
  • Chris Vincent, former mayor, vice mayor and commissioner of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
  • Chad Volkert, Sea Ranch Lakes commissioner

Part of Moraitis’s platform includes support for former President Donald Trump and a promise of continued alignment if elected. His stated priorities, according to his campaign website, are border security, tax cuts and affordable energy. He is a real estate attorney with the law firm Moraitis, Karney, Moraitis & Quailey.

His wife, Heather Moraitis, also has political experience, having served as a Fort Lauderdale city commissioner from 2018 to 2022.
