The White House announced that it will host the 2026 G20 Summit at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida, marking 17 years since the conference last took place in the U.S.
The G20 Summit is a meeting of the 20 most impactful countries and economies where issues such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development are all discussed and acted upon.
In response to the White House’s announcement, Florida lawmakers are welcoming the conference to Miami, asserting it will be a large economic boost to the area.
“The summit in December 2026 would be a boon for small business owners who are going to benefit economically from having the G20 in Miami.” Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said.
South Florida Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R) said he is “Thrilled to welcome the 2026 G20 Summit to beautiful Miami, Florida” and called Miami “The Gateway to the Americas,” detailing how the city’s diverse culture “showcases the very best of our nation.”
Florida Congressman Byron Donalds (R) released a statement claiming Florida to be the ideal location for hosting the G20 due to Florida’s economic status.
“Florida is the cultural and economic powerhouse of the greatest country known to man. There is no place that better represents our nation on the world stage than the Sunshine State. Together, we welcome the G20 Conference to Florida next December,” he said.
In 2019, during his first term, President Donald Trump attempted to host the G7 Summit at the same location but bipartisan criticism stopped him after revelations showed his plans would violate a criminal statute and ethics regulations prohibiting conflicts of interest for government employees, including the president.
However, the Supreme Court ruled last year that presidents have a vague criminal immunity for official acts taken while in office, allowing Trump to move forward with his plan to host the G20.
In response to backlash, the president has insisted that he will “make no money” and implied there would be no conflict of interest for him in hosting foreign leaders at the Trump National.
