Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) is introducing a bill improving the transparency of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) prescription practices.
Specifically, Rep. Bilirakis's Written Informed Consent Act requires the VA to inform veterans through writing of the potential side effects of drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, stimulants, anxiolytics, and narcotics prescribed through their system.
Additionally, a standardized written consent form must be included, as only verbal disclosures are currently required.
"Our Veterans deserve nothing less than complete transparency when it comes to their health and the medications they're prescribed," said Rep. Bilirakis in his press release, adding, "The Written Informed Consent Act will empower Veterans to make better-informed decisions about their treatment and protect their right to understand the risks involved."
Representative Jack Bergman (R-MI), one of the bill's cosponsors, said, "The Written Informed Consent Act ensures that before powerful medications are prescribed, Veterans receive clear, written information about the potential side effects."
"Veterans deserve full transparency when it comes to their care. This is about respect, accountability, and empowering Veterans to make informed decisions about their health. It's a simple, commonsense step toward improving trust and safety within the VA healthcare system," Rep. Bergman added.
Finally, Representative Keith Self (R-TX) emphasized how "The Written Informed Consent Act is a vital step toward ensuring our Veterans receive the transparency they deserve.
"By mandating clear, written disclosures of potential side effects for medications like antipsychotics and narcotics, this bill empowers Veterans to make better-informed decisions about their treatment. I am proud to partner with Representatives Bilirakis and Bergman to protect the rights and uphold the dignity of the men and women who've served our nation," Rep. Self concluded.
In June 2023, Rep. Bilirakis's colleague, Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL), introduced the Safe Disposal for Servicemembers Act, which would require all military bases to install and maintain drop boxes through which servicemembers can dispose of unused prescription drugs.
