Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer pitched to New Yorkers on Monday to leave the Big Apple after self-proclaimed Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won New York City's democratic mayoral primary last week, putting him in a strong position to become the city's next mayor.
"In @CityBocaRaton we are happy to turn lemons into lemonade and welcome New Yorkers looking to flee high taxes for a better quality of life," Singer said. "Looking to make your next move, your best move? We are here to welcome you to our great city."
Speaking to the New York Post, Singer said, "numerous" New York City business leaders have talked to him about leaving the city and coming to Boca Raton after Mamdani's election day victory over Andrew Cuomo, New York's former governor.
Singer added he expected more calls from leaders looking to come to Boca Raton due to New York's high taxes. Mamdani has said he would raise property taxes on "richer and whiter" communities if elected as mayor of America's largest city in November.
His campaign platform also includes "taxing corporations and the 1%."
A Republican, Singer has been Boca Raton's mayor since 2018. Days ago, he compared Boca Raton to New York City in a post.
"In Boca we look to lower taxes, not raise them," Singer said. "We prioritize public safety and fund our police department. We make it easy to open a business with concierge services."
Among his other positions, Mamdani has advocated for government-owned grocery stores in New York City, a rent freeze on the city's approximately 1 million rent-regulated apartments, and building more affordable housing.
Before the primary, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she wouldn't raise taxes in the Empire State, worrying a Mamdani victory could send residents packing to places like Boca Raton in Palm Beach County.
The New York City mayoral election is on Nov. 4.
