The state of Israel is under alert as Houthi missile attacks rain down on Israeli citizens in northern Israel.
The missile attacks have occurred in the midst of daily US strikes against the Houthis as part of President Donald Trump’s "maximum pressure campaign” against them.
The Houthis, an Iran-backed Yemeni terror group, have been targeting US, Israeli, and allies’ ships since Hamas’ October 7th, 2023 attacks.
Houthi forces have orchestrated drone and missile attacks against US military and commercial ships and increasingly directly attacked Israel’s civilian population.
Beside attacking Israeli citizens, Houthi forces recently shot down US military drones in defiance of the US’s continued attacks against their military personnel and strategic posts.
President Trump responded by warning the Houthis and Iran against continuing to attack the US and its allies or face expanded military consequences.
Trump warned that “Iran will be held responsible” for the Houthis’ disruptive behavior.
“Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon, from this point forward, as being a shot fired from the weapons and leadership of Iran,” said Trump. “Iran will be held responsible, and suffer the consequences, and those consequences will be dire!”
Earlier in April, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Houthi entities purchasing weapons and commodities, such as stolen Ukrainian gran, from Russia.
While Trump’s campaign against the Houthis has reportedly significantly weaned the terror group’s capabilities, the latest attacks in northern Israel suggest the Houthis still pose a significant threat to the safety of the US and its allies
The situation has reportedly prompted the US government to consider alternate avenues, such as supporting a ground invasion against the Houthis.
Yemeni pro-government militias are allegedly preparing to invade areas controlled by the Houthis to drive them out of key areas under their control.
US officials have not officially supported the ground invasion idea, but reports claim they could be helping coordinate them through back channels.
