MIAMI—Miami City Commissioner Damian Pardo has introduced a resolution proposing lifetime term limits for elected officials, aiming to cap service at two terms as mayor and two terms as commissioner. This initiative seeks to prevent individuals from returning to office after serving the maximum terms, promoting fresh leadership. The commission is set to deliberate on this proposal today.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that part of the resolution—specifically the extension of terms for all current commissioners and the mayor by one year—was allegedly requested by Mayor Francis Suarez, under the pretext of aligning municipal elections with on-year elections. This potential extension has raised concerns among residents about the democratic process and the possibility of officeholders prolonging their terms without direct voter approval.
