MIAMI - Miami-Dade Republican sheriff candidate Rosie Cordero-Stutz announced Tuesday that she has been endorsed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

"I am incredibly honored to receive the endorsement of @GovRonDeSantis, a proven leader who has done an incredible job serving the State of Florida and its residents," Cordero-Stutz said on social media. "His demonstrated commitment to public safety, law enforcement, and the well-being of Floridians has set the standard for strong, effective leadership. I am grateful for his support and confidence in my ability to serve as Miami-Dade's next Sheriff."

Vying to become the county's first elected sheriff in nearly 60 years, Cordero-Stutz has already pledged to fight immigration if chosen by voters in November. She also promised to bring a "voice" to policing in Miami-Dade and work with Democrat Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

"As Sheriff, I will work tirelessly to uphold the highest standards of law enforcement and protect every resident of our great county. Together, with your support and the Governor’s continued leadership, Miami-Dade will remain safe and secure," Cordero-Stutz continued.

DeSantis' endorsement follows a long line of Republican state leaders backing Cordero-Stutz, which include Florida Sen. Rick Scott and U.S. Reps. Carlos Gimenez and Mario Diaz-Balart. She also has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

“I’m happy to endorse the law-and-order candidate for Miami-Dade Sheriff, Rosie Cordero-Stutz," DeSantis said. "As the first elected Sheriff of Miami-Dade County in nearly half a century, Rosie will deliver for the residents by ensuring a tough-on-crime environment and following the rule of law."

Miami-Dade has had an appointed "police director" since 1966. In 2018, Florida voters restored the elected sheriff position after passing Amendment 10.

Like DeSantis, Cordero-Stutz is hoping to earn the support of county voters. In Florida's 2022 gubernatorial election, DeSantis defeated Democratic Candidate Charlie Crist and carried Miami-Dade County by 11 points.

Familiar with the county, Cordero-Stutz has a strong background in law enforcement. Over the years, she has moved up in rank and currently works as Assistant Director of Investigative Services for the Miami-Dade Police Department.

"Rosie is a 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department and she is best equipped to be an effective and trusted Sheriff on day one. "I look forward to working with her when she is elected this November," DeSantis added.

Running against Democrat James Reyes, the Miami-Dade Sheriff election is scheduled for Nov. 5.
