Florida Representatives in U.S. House React to Trump Assassination Attempt, Denounce Violence

Share

U.S. Representatives from the state of Florida shared their reactions to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump’s (R) life. On Saturday a gunman shot and nearly killed the former president at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. President Trump’s right ear was pierced by a bullet, millimeters from an even more catastrophic event. Sadly, an audience member was killed, and two spectators were critically injured. Secret Service killed the gunman.

House Party Leaders

“The assassination attempt of President Trump yesterday was a horrific act of political violence. The American people need answers and the House is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation is conducted,” said Speaker Johnson.

“My thoughts and prayers are with former President Trump. I am thankful for the decisive law enforcement response. America is a democracy. Political violence of any kind is never acceptable," said Leader Jeffries.

Below are the reactions of both (but not all) Republicans and Democrats from the state of Florida following the attempted assassination of President Trump.

Republicans

“It is great that President Trump is doing well. It is sad beyond measure that a rally attendee was killed and that others were wounded. The American people deserve answers about how this could have happened, as well as information about the assassin,” said Gov. DeSantis.

“My family and I are heartbroken over the loss of Corey Comperatore, a victim of yesterday’s senseless attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. While we are deeply grieved by the loss of his life, we are also inspired to hear of the legacy he left behind. In his last moments, he shielded his family from the bullets that flew toward them. Corey was a husband, a father, a brother, a former fire chief, a man of faith, and someone who was simply seeking to express his support for President Trump. No one should ever worry about their safety while at a political rally. Sending the Comperatore family and the town of Butler, PA our condolences," said Rep. Paulina Luna.

“Grateful to hear that President Trump is safe and doing well. Thank you to the brave law enforcement officers who put their lives at risk to protect President Trump. I am heartbroken to hear that someone lost their life. I am praying for their family and also for those who were injured. Political violence has no place in our country," said Rep. Lee.

Democrats

“The attack on former President Trump is unconscionable. No matter your beliefs, violence has no place in our politics. My wishes for safety and recovery are with the ex-President, and my heart goes out to the rally victims and their families," said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.

“In America, we settle differences and debates at the ballot box, not with violence. Without the fast response of law enforcement and secret service this awful shooting could have been much worse," said Rep. Castor.

“Political violence is never the answer and every political leader must make that crystal clear. Our country cannot delve into one where we attack political leaders. Wishing Former President Trump a speedy recovery!" said Rep. Wilson.

This is a developing story.
