Former President Donald Trump held a Sunday rally in Las Vegas where he shared his plans to reach the Hispanic community by launching a new campaign entitled “Latino Americans for Trump,” a shift from the original “Latinos for Trump” to emphasize that Latinos are American.
“In 2020, we got more votes from Hispanic Americans than any Republican in 50 years, and we won the Texas border council that no Republican candidate had won in more than a century!" Trump said Sunday, before touching on his platform of a strong economy, lower prices, and a secure border. "In 2024, we will win an even larger share of the Hispanic American vote, setting all-time records for Republicans up and down the ballot.”
He referenced that during his time in office, the Latino-American community saw a record-low unemployment rate.
Jamie Florez, the Hispanic communications director for the Trump campaign, explained the name change, stating, “It’s very important that we all understand that no matter where we’re coming from, we’re already American."
“Whether you’re African American, Latino American, Asian American, European American, wherever you come from, we are all American,” she added.
Senator Marco Rubio agreed, stating, “President Trump understands the challenges Hispanic Americans are facing under the Biden Administration. Everything costs more. Our communities aren’t safe, and the world is on fire. President Trump is not going to play petty politics. He focuses on rebuilding this country and making life better for you and your family.”
Senator Ted Cruz echoed his colleague, commending the "booming" Hispanic economy under Trump. He then swiped at Biden, claiming he has "reversed" Trump's progress "completely."
"Which is why America needs to elect President Trump come November," Cruz said.
Latinos, who have largely voted Democrat in the past, have begun to shift more toward Trump and away from Biden, a March poll showed, despite some Democrats' assertions that the Latino community would rebuke Trump and his “cruel” policies.
Polls now put Trump’s support among Hispanic voters at 32% to 35%, which is remarkable considering Trump was so heavily disparaged for his antipathy for immigrants. The effectiveness of his outreach efforts will be crucial in determining the direction of the Latino voters in the upcoming election.
