Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) faced defeat this week as the House struck down his plan to ban Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funds from being used to provide amnesty. To add insult to injury, the bill failed after 14 House Republicans joined 202 House Democrats to block its passing.
The amnesty effort, announced this week, allows at least 550,000 illegal immigrant spouses and children of American citizens to attain green cards, ensuring a pathway to naturalized American citizenship. As well, illegal immigrants who have graduated from an American university would be able to attain work visas.
Texas Rep. Roy rallied against the effort, but it wasn’t enough to convince 14 Republicans in voting against it.
The Republicans who voted against the bill include California Reps. John Duarte (R), David Valadao (R), Michelle Steele (R), and Young Kim (R); Florida Reps. Maria Elvira Salazar (R), Mario Díaz-Balart (R), and Carlos Gimenez (R); Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R); Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R); Ohio Rep. David Joyce (R); New Jersey Rep. Thomas Kean (R); New York Rep. Mike Lawler (R); Delegate from American Samoa Amata Radewagen (R); and Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Jenniffer González-Colón (R).
Though Rep. Roy has not commented on his Republican colleagues voting against his measure, others have spoken out, sharing their disappointment in supporting the effort.
Ryan Walker, the Executive Vice President of Heritage Action, took to social media to comment that “Biden’s latest mass amnesty order circumvents the law and Congress to reward illegal aliens at the expense of American taxpayers.”

Rep. Roy has been critical of the Republican Party and social conservative groups alike in the past, accusing them of not standing up to the Biden Administration regarding issues such as illegal immigration and government spending.
