At a recent campaign event, U.S. Senate hopeful Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) stated that she supported border security funding during her time as a U.S. Representative from 2019-21.

“When I was in Congress, I supported funding for border security. I voted for funding for border security," said Mucarsel-Powell

While she may have voted for omnibus or appropriations bills that include funding for border security, her voting record on individual issues suggests otherwise.

For instance, in 2019 she voted against a $64.6 million increase in funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including the Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). She also voted against an increase in funding for a $75 million Department of Justice immigration review office.

Moreover, she also voted against HR 1, including the sentiment that American voters’ right to cast ballots is deluded when illegal immigrants are allowed to vote. Also, she voted against alerting ICE if an illegal alien attempts to purchase a firearm.

Additionally, former Rep. Mucarsel-Powell voted to terminate former President Donald Trump’s (R) emergency declaration at the southern border and even voted to reopen the federal government without funding the border wall.

Regarding these matters, the Scott campaign provided a statement to The Floridian regarding her voting record.

“Former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell must have forgotten that the votes she took during her short time in Congress are public record. Or she’s just flat out lying to Floridians. Either way, she can’t go back and change her votes now. And we will continue to remind Floridians that she voted for Democrats’ open borders agenda every chance she got. She voted with Nancy Pelosi 100% of the time, Ilhan Omar 94% of the time, and AOC 93% of the time. It’s no wonder Floridians rejected her after one term in Congress. She’s too radical for the Sunshine State.”

Also, the Scott campaign said in the past, “Floridians – especially those who have experienced the horrors of socialism firsthand – know that Debbie Mucarsel-Powell would be a rubber stamp for the failed appeasement policies of the Obama and Biden administrations. That’s why they rejected her once already and will reject her again in November.”

Senator Rick Scott will likely face Mucarsel-Powell in November if she makes it out of her primary race. She is the likely front-runner at the moment with President Joe Biden’s (D) endorsement.
