Scott Grills Mayorkas on Capitol Hill Over Border Crisis

Share

During a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) lambasted Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Following the historic dismissal of Mayorkas’ impeachment trial, Mayorkas appeared in front of the upper chamber for questioning.

“Secretary Mayorkas, you’re the first cabinet official to be impeached in our country’s history. I think it’s a sad first for our nation. Not because this wasn’t warranted, but because it was completely warranted by your catastrophic failure that has created a wide-open border,” said Sen. Scott.

He continued, “I personally fully support what the House did. I think I’ve been honest with you – how I view your job performance. I don’t believe not just once, but multiple times you lied under oath that the border was secure. It’s not. And I think that’s clearly a lie. And it’s a lie that our nation is rooting for the consequences of your failures.”

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) slim majority of 51 Democrats in the upper chamber dismissed the trial before it ever began. Leader Schumer called it “the least legitimate, least substantive, and most politicized impeachment trial ever in the history of the United States.”

However, Sen. Scott called out Senate Democrats for “destroying more than 200 years of precedent” by not holding the impeachment trial.

“Yesterday, Senate Democrats destroyed more than 200 years of precedent and chose to ignore the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas by the U.S. House of Representatives. The men and women serving in CBP and ICE are doing the best they can, but the horrific policies of Mayorkas and Biden make their jobs impossible,” said Scott.

He continued, “Today, more than 10 million people have illegally crossed and 6 million have been allowed to stay and had the red carpet rolled out for them courtesy of the American taxpayers because Secretary Mayorkas has failed to enforce the law and ordered his agency to ignore it. There have been sexual assaults and murders committed by illegal aliens all over the country – even in Florida, where a young man was recently killed.”

In a scenario in which House Republicans impeach President Joe Biden (D) before the election, the precedent set by Leader Schumer would allow Senate Democrats to dismiss the trial as well since they hold the majority.
