Mucarsel-Powell Takes Aim at Scott's Pro-Life Record After Supreme Court Ruling

Former Congresswoman and U.S. Senate hopeful Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL) appears confident in her bid to oust incumbent Senator Rick Scott (R-FL). After the State Supreme Court confirmed that abortion would be on the ballot for Floridians in November, former Rep. Mucarsel-Powell is doubling down on her efforts to call out Sen. Scott for his “radical reproductive rights record” and his pro-life stance.

“The rulings ensure that abortion rights will be front and center on the minds of Floridians as they head to the polls this November, and Rick Scott’s support for both a national abortion ban and Florida’s cruel and extreme abortion ban are an existential threat to his reelection bid,” a memo from Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign read the day of the State Supreme Court’s ruling. “Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is taking the fight to Rick Scott on abortion rights.”

Furthermore, the Senate hopeful expanded upon her jab against Sen. Scott with another press release.

Rick Scott thinks he can lie about his record on reproductive rights, but Floridians remember when he supported criminalizing health care providers, banning abortion before most women know they are pregnant, and stood with extremists who want to ban IVF,” said Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “He is ready to force a national abortion ban and put his dangerous and extreme reproductive stances in Americans’ bedrooms and doctors’ offices if he is elected to a second term. Come November, Floridians will prove that we are committed to protecting our fundamental rights and standing up to the radical leaders who threaten them.”

However, Sen. Scott released a statement in response to the rulings.

“We must work hard to make adoption more affordable, and I’ll always protect IVF, an issue that’s important to me and my family, as well as countless Floridians,” said Scott. “Floridians also agree that there should be some reasonable limits placed on abortion.”

He continued, “Sadly, my opponent opposes ANY limits on abortion, allowing it even after a baby can feel pain and suck their thumb, even up to the baby’s due date,” he continued. “She is ok with a baby’s skull being crushed at 9 months and ok with a newborn baby being put in the corner crying and left to die. That’s what extremism looks like.”

The two are expected to face off in November.
