Earlier this week, Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D) warned that protests at Columbia and other universities could lead to the spread of antisemitism. All Democrats however do not agree with the sentiment. After the vote to send Israel aid, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders (I) slammed the decision, drawing criticism from Rep. Moskowitz. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D) quickly rushed to Senator Sanders' defense, resulting in Reps. AOC and Moskowitz trading social media jabs over the situation.
Senator Sanders voiced his disapproval with the Senate earlier this week.
The Vermont Senator attempted to restore funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East as well as stopping military aid for Israel. However, the senator's amendments were blocked, and the senator said it would usher dark days ahead as the United States funds "Netanyahu's War Machine."
The comments drew criticism from Rep. Moskowitz, who called on Senator Sanders to talk about the recent protests on university campuses wherein protestors have yelled "we are Hamas," "go back to Poland!" and "burn Tel Aviv to the ground."
Rep. AOC quickly responded to Rep. Moskowitz, calling his questioning "shameful."
She explained that "Sen. Sanders' family was killed in the Holocaust" and that "he dedicated his every moment to realizing Tikkun Olam."
"His commitment to protecting innocents in Gaza stems FROM his Jewish values," she added. "He and many other Jewish leaders deserve better than to be treated this way."
In response, Rep. Moskowitz detailed: "my family was also killed in the Holocaust. In Germany and in Poland. My grandmother was in the kinder-transport. They also instilled values in me. It's why I voted for aid to Israel and for aid to Gaza. We see each other at work, we are both better than doing this here."
