Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Donald Trump has faced a roadblock in the form of Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who recently demanded Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz investigate the Special Counsel for election interference.

Rep. Gatez specifically cited Smith's calls for Trump to stand trial before the November election, which violates regulations in place against timing legal procedures with political events.

"Quite apart from any innuendo or conjecture (and it is wildly clear to the American public that no legitimate purpose exists for Smith’s investigation), a brief of the Special Counsel, before the Supreme Court of the United States, itself tacitly concedes a violation of Departmental rules," Rep. Gaetz wrote in his letter to Horowitz, meaning Smith urged "rapid review" of Federal prosecution against Trump without ever explaining why it was warranted.

"It is indisputable that we are already in an election season," Gaetz continued, adding it may be "morally correct" for the Justice Department to resolve the Special Counsel investigation quickly, either by acquitting Trump or dropping the charges.

More to the point, however, the Florida Congressman scolded the Justice Department for refusing to follow "narrow and reasonable oversight requests of the House of Representatives," which he said was "a separate issue worth investigating."

Nevertheless, he conceded the call for an investigation into Jack Smith could be as simple as interviewing him and establishing if he had a lawful reason to seek the expediting his investigation into Trump, "Or it may be wider."

In August, Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) dismissed Smith as "somewhat of a lunatic," who "will do anything, and I mean anything, to try and get a conviction."

"Jack Smith is the prosecutor who will try to go after any possible thing. And frankly, he is somewhat of a lunatic. We saw this when he went after Bob McDonnell, the former Governor of Virginia, and that case had to be thrown out. At the end of the day, the reason why Merrick Garland chose Jack Smith is because Jack Smith will do anything, and I mean anything, to try and get a conviction," said Donalds.
