Over the past several years, Democrats have watched the state of Florida slip away from a competitive swing state, to a blood-red conservative state. Now, Democrats are changing up their political strategy by banking on Taylor Swift to help them perform well in Florida the next election cycle.
The pop singer has made a resurgence this year with her apparent relationship with Kansas City Tight End, Travis Kelce, making headlines. Arguably, more people know about Swift than ever before and the artist has concerts scheduled in Miami just before the 2024 election, as well as a new song called, "Florida!!!" on her next album.
Democrats have used celebrities to market their platforms before, but for Florida Democrats, it looks like they may be using Swift's celebrity as the driving force behind their upcoming election performance.
US Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) is the first Gen Z member of Congress. Representative Frost stated, "It’s so close to the election, and we hope that there’s a message included to encourage folks, especially her fans, to go vote." Maxwell added, "we need the help."
Politico further reported that the Democratic Party is planning on registering voters at her concerts, and will host various activities to try and get Taylor Swift fans on board politically. Jayden D’Onofrio, who chairs the Florida Democratic Party’s Youth Council, further confirmed party members will be at the concert to make sure they are getting engagement with young people.
The idea that the Florida Democratic Party will be hanging onto the hopes that they can tag along to a Taylor Swift concert to pick up voters speaks volumes about the state of the party in Florida. The Florida Republican Party in recent years has managed to increase voter registrations and actually outnumber Democrats time and time again.
