Mills Seeks to Adjust Afghanistan Special Inspector General Jurisdiction

Share

Washington, D.C.- US Representative Cory Mills (R-Fl) filed a bill yesterday modifying  the scope of the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR).

Representative Mills’ H.R.6247 comes after the fall of the US-backed Afghanistan government to Taliban terrorists.

The SIGAR Office was established to oversee the handling of the over $147.23 billion that has been appropriated for Afghanistan relief and reconstruction since 2002.

SIGAR conducts audits and investigations to promote efficiency and effectiveness of reconstruction programs and  detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.

Given the pullout of the US from Afghanistan, some conservatives have claimed the SIGAR Office should be disbanded, as was done similarly after the US departed from Iraq in 2011.

Late last week, US Senators took initial steps to legally prevent the US government from establishing official ties with the Taliban Afghani government.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fl) and colleagues floored an initiative to prevent the US State Department or any official US entity from officially recognizing the present Taliban-led afghan government.

Senator Rubio also introduced a bill to officially  designate the illegitimate Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as a state sponsor of terrorism and the Taliban as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).

“A Taliban-controlled Afghanistan poses a direct threat to our national security interests as well as our allies and partners both in the Middle East and in Central Asia,” said Rubio.

Rubio explained via press release that, after the “botched military withdrawal from Afghanistan has left the nation as a safe haven for anti-American terrorists,”  designating the Taliban as an FTO was “the logical next step.”

Representative Mills has also previously criticized President Joe Biden’s management of Afghanistan, going as far as claiming the president “armed” the Taliban.

Mills had harsh words for President Biden on Fox's Mornings with Maria, saying the President "single handedly armed one of the world's worst terrorist organizations."
