DeSantis Says no to Vice President Hypothetical

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) had a busy weekend as he sat down with Bill Maher to discuss the Republican primary. The presidential hopeful also discussed the election with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures. During the interview, DeSantis reaffirmed that his goal is to be president and not Vice President for any other candidate.

During his interview with Maher, he was asked why he would run for this election. Given his age and the fact that President Donald Trump (R) had also announced his intention to run, Maher suggested that DeSantis should have waited. However, DeSantis argued that he’s running in this election because he doesn’t believe that Trump can deliver the remedies needed to fix the issues the U.S. is facing.

Despite this claim, since making his announcement, President Trump has been the Republican frontrunner. Because of this, pundits have questioned if any of the Republican challengers would end up being Trump’s Vice-Presidential pick. Last Wednesday in Detroit, Trump commented that “they’re all job candidates. They’ll do anything, secretary of something. They even say VP.”

Bartiromo asked DeSantis what his response would be if Trump asked him to be his Vice President, and DeSantis said he would respond with “no, I’m running for president.”

Further explaining why he would turn down the role of VP, DeSantis explained that “we need somebody that can serve two terms. We need somebody that can win states like Georgia and Arizona, which President Trump cannot do or did not do, even though candidates like McCain and Romney had no problem winning those states.”

DeSantis added that “we need somebody who, and I’m the only one running including Donald Trump, everything I’ve promised the voters that I would do as governor of Florida, I’ve delivered on.”

Detailing what he’s delivered as governor, DeSantis explained, “we delivered budget surpluses, paying down debt, tax cut, school choice, parents’ rights, banning sanctuary cities, expanding Second Amendment rights.”
