Covo Defends Miami Commissioner Seat in Tight Race

Share

Down in South Florida, an upcoming election could turn into a hotly contested election in an eight-way race.   Incumbent Commissioner Sabina Covo (D), who won a special election for the seat she won last February 27th, is running for reelection. but has to answer for crucial hiccups during her term as commissioner.

In February of 2023, Covo was elected to fill the vacant commissioner seat.  Covo made history as the second-only Latina woman elected to the commission.  This is crucial, especially in a place like South Florida, where the cultural hegemony is largely Hispanic

Covo was elected to finish Russell’s term and now faces re-election. The district encompasses Coconut Grove, Brickell, some areas of Downtown, Edgewater, and Morningside. All the candidates faced difficulty in getting started as the final district maps were only approved by the courts in early September.

Although there are 8 candidates in the race, the top three candidates are the current commissioner Sabina Covo, Eddy Leal, and Damian Pardo.

However, this reputation can only get Covo so far as she fights to remain in office.  Within the first month of taking office, Covo was reported to have not known the American Pledge of Allegiance.  During a March 9 County Commission meeting, Commissioner Covo was asked to recite the Pledge, to which there was no intelligible answer given.

As parts of Miami-Dade grow more conservative, evidenced by Governor Ron DeSantis' (R-FL) decisive win over the entire state and South Florida, there is no guarantee anyone holds onto the region.
