Will DeSantis 'Drain the Swamp' and Hold Clinton Accountable?

Share

If elected President, will Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis turn his political sights onto former Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?

Gov. DeSantis says he will do what former President Donald Trump failed to do—Drain the Swamp and hold Clinton accountable.

After former President Donald Trump was served with a fourth indictment, many Republican lawmakers came to his defense, including some of his former 2016 presidential primary opponents, but current presidential candidate, Gov. DeSantis, did not.

As expected, several of the other candidates in the 2024 Republican presidential sweepstakes, took shots at President Trump over the apparent politically motivated indictments, but Gov. DeSantis has not said much about the indictment, rather criticized Trump for not doing more to reign in the Department of Justice and the rest of “The Swamp” while he was in office.

“What we need to do is get a President obviously that can beat Biden, but that can actually end the weaponization of federal power through the DOJ, the FBI. So for example, with me as president on Day One, Christopher Wray gets sent packing. You're going to see the DOJ cleared out. We're going to ensure a single standard of justice in this country again, and I can say that with credibility because I've done that in the state of Florida. We drained the swamp. And here, we've gotten rid of negligent election supervisors in South Florida, we've removed two different progressive prosecutors funded by Soros who were not enforcing the law,” said DeSantis during an appearance on the Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” with host Laura Ingraham.

DeSantis continued to spell out his bona fides for why he should is better suited to be President, but when asked about how Trump now appears to have a personal interest in “draining the Swamp,” DeSantis pivoted to dismissing Trump’s actions, saying that the former president failed to hold Clinton accountable like he said he would, and did not fire FBI Director Wray.

“Well, he had three years to fire Christopher Wray and he didn't fire him. And remember I went to the rallies in 2016 Laura you remember the— “Lock her up, lock her up” about holding Hillary accountable, and then two weeks after the election he said ‘Never mind that I said that’ and let her off the,” added DeSantis.

DeSantis's new aggressive, anti-Trump tone could be seen as a last-ditch effort to revive his rebooted presidential campaign as polls continue to show him in decline, and Trump surging, regardless of the indictments.

But will this tone hold up, and will it help garner him more support from the hardcore Conservative, or MAGA base of the Republican Party?

Many, many MAGA Republicans say that they will not support DeSantis over Trump, and even if DeSantis were to win the nomination, they would rather write in Trump’s name than back DeSantis, who they feel turned his back on the former president.

If this political phenomena were to occur, it could spell lights out for the Republican Party. If the MAGA base of the party does not turn out in 2024, for whatever reason, Republicans could lose the House of Representatives and put Democrats in the position of controlling the executive and the Legislative branches, and quite possibly the judicial branch.

Democrats have already signaled that they would change the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court by increasing the number of progressive-minded justices that sit on the bench.

The latest public opinion polls show Trump currently running away with the Republican presidential nomination with DeSantis at a distant second place.
