Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) unveiled a new and bold economic policy plan this week. However, DeSantis is now receiving criticism from a top pro-life group as he celebrates his policy. Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America criticized Governor DeSantis over his failure to support federal abortion restrictions.
During a recent interview with Megyn Kelly, Governor DeSantis argued that abortion policy would best be decided by the states. This has drawn a response from SBA Pro-Life America, who called his comments “unacceptable.”
In his comments, Governor DeSantis called himself a “pro-life governor,” saying that he’d “be a pro-life president and I’ll come down on the side of life.”
DeSantis went on to say that he would “be a leader with the bully pulpit to help local communities and states advance the cause of life.” However, he mentioned that he did not believed that Congress would do “anything meaningful” regarding the political matter.
In response to his comments, Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of SBA Pro-Life America, said that calling for restrictions on abortions despite obstacles in Congress “is where presidential leadership matters most.”
“Gov. DeSantis’ dismissal of this task is unacceptable to pro-life voters,” Dannenfelser said.” She added that “a consensus is already formed. Intensity for it is palpable and measurable. There are many pressing legislative issues for which Congress does not have the votes at the moment, but that is not a reason for a strong leader to back away from the fight.”
Abortion rights have been a prominent topic of discussion in the political landscape after the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. Subsequently, DeSantis signed into law a six-week abortion ban.
DeSantis is not the only political candidate that SBA Pro-Life has taken an issue with. The group has also condemned President Donald Trump (R) and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) over not adopting a 15-week standard that they have called on all the Republican primary candidates to accept.
