Gimenez Compares Biden to Daniel Ortega for Persecuting Trump

With former President Donald Trump facing a fourth indictment, many Republicans are saying this is little more than election interference by President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) directly compared President Biden to Nicaraguan dictator Daniel Ortega in a recent appearance on Fox Business's Mornings with Maria.

"It appears that Biden has taken a page out of Daniel Ortega," said Rep. Gimenez, "Daniel Ortega won reelection in Nicaragua last year simply by putting all of his opponents in jail. And so it looks like, 'hey, that worked pretty well for Daniel Ortega. Maybe it will work for me too."

The Wall Street Journal described how Ortega charged three presidential candidates and four others with treason in kangaroo courts that did not allow the defendants transcripts, notes, or private conversations with their lawyers.

While the situation with Trump may not be at that level, commentators have noted that the courts expected to hold Trump's trials are in heavily Democrat voting areas, making for a hostile jury.

Additionally, the court dates are very close to major days in election season, which would prohibit Trump from campaigning effectively.

"And it appears to be all political, all this stuff," Rep. Gimenez continued, "they want to have these trials as soon as possible. Yeah, right in the middle of election season. Are you looking for justice or are you just looking for a way to derail your political opponent?"

Gimenez concluded by saying the House Oversight and Weaponization Committees will "continue to dig," adding that he would have never imagined in "[his] wildest dreams" to see politically-motivated indictments against Americans.

"We in the House are looking at the weaponization of the FBI and the DOJ. We need to continue to dig. It is pretty obvious what is happening here in the United States, and it is pretty sad, what is happening here. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be looking at what is going on right now with the DOJ and the FBI," Gimenez concluded.

Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) similarly decried the indictments against Trump as "the gross unfairness that we see in third-world countries."
