Political pundits argue that the DeSantis campaign was dealt a heavy blow this week. Polls showed that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is down almost 49 points in Florida compared to President Donald Trump (R). While DeSantis downplayed the polls, Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani (D) argues that the DeSantis campaign is in “denial” about his position in the Republican race.
DeSantis largely blames the low polling numbers as a “media narrative,” arguing that the media does not want him to be the Republican nominee because they know he’ll defeat Biden. Instead, Rep. Eskamani says that the DeSantis campaign is in “denial” about the appeal he has with voters.
Because of the polling, a leaked memo showed that the DeSantis campaign is trying to quell any worry that donors might have about his campaign. This along with the campaign shakeup that his team received this month could potentially spell trouble for the presidential hopeful ahead of the first debate debate in August.
Responding to this, Eskamani shared that “the DeSantis campaign is on life support.” She further explained that “when you send them a warning memo, that is definitely a time to be incredibly nervous.”
State Senator Sam Garrison (R), who’s endorsed DeSantis for president, commented that this is just overhyped nonsense. Citing the 2016 election, Garrison mentioned that Florida Governor Jeb Bush (R) was leading in the polls before ultimately dropping out because of lack of support or a viable way to the nomination.
However, Garrison did suggest that DeSantis shouldn’t disregard the warnings.
Trump and DeSantis have been embroiled in a rivalry dating back to the 2022 midterm election wherein Trump even campaigned against the Florida Governor.
Both have traded verbal political blows, and the debate in August will be the first time that both will face each other on a political stage.
