DeSantis Regarding Trump: 'I Hope He Doesn't Get Charged'

Share

In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis (R-FL) discussed his opponent, former President Donald Trump (R), and the new indictment from Special Counsel Jack Smith surrounding January 6.

Gov. DeSantis stated that the series of events leading to the anticipated third indictment means that “this country is going down the road of criminalizing political differences.”

“And so, you have a situation where the Department of Justice, FBI, have been weaponized against people they don’t like and the number one example that happened to be against Donald Trump with the Russia collusion. That was not a legitimate investigation, that was being done to try to drive Trump out of office,” stated Gov. DeSantis.

The Florida governor is in a unique spot in American politics. He has decided to support President Trump in his fight against the Justice Department while simultaneously attempting to declare himself the commonsense candidate.

In March, Gov. DeSantis made headlines when he stated, “I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair,” referring to the Stormy Daniels case in Alvin Bragg’s Manhattan. However, in the Tapper interview, DeSantis maintains that Bragg “stretched the statute” to “try to target Donald Trump.”

In response to this notion, DeSantis stated that he will make major changes to the justice system in Washington to address the targeting of political opponents.

“As President, my job is to restore a single standard of justice to end weaponization of these agencies. We’re going to have a new FBI director on day one, we’re going to have big changes at the Department of Justice. Americans across the political spectrum need to have confidence that what is going on is based on the rule of law, not based on what political tribe you’re in,” said DeSantis.” He would go on to mention that “I want to focus on looking forward. I don’t want to look back; I hope he doesn’t get charged. I don’t think it’ll be good for the country. But at the same time, I’ve got to focus on looking forward and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Florida Representative, a staunch Trump supporter (he endorsed him in April), stated emphatically that he and his wife, Erika “STAND WITH DONALD J. TRUMP.”

“There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice. - Montesquieu. Erika Donalds & I STAND WITH DONALD J. TRUMP,” said Rep. Donalds.

Should Special Counsel Jack Smith indict Trump as expected, it will third indictment that the former President will have to face.
