City of Miami Commissioner Covo Pushes a Not-so-Green Legislative Measure

Share

The City of Miami appears to be abandoning its “Go Green” initiative and looking to adopt the growing and popular grey concrete appeal. In a recent resolution introduced by City Commissioner Sabina Covo, yes, the same Covo who didn’t know the Pledge of Allegiance, the measure abandons an appeal that would have kept Allen Morris Park in the city’s overall public park inventory.

In other words, Covo’s resolution lifted any and all safeguards to prevent the park from being developed.

In addition, Covo’s action directs the city manager to partially open the park up to commercial zoning

With so many people moving to Florida on a daily basis, Miami is running out of real estate so the trend is to build upwards continues to grow.

With that said, unused plots of city land and parks, are considered prime real estate, so the move to lift protections from development from any park is highly questionable considering how few public parks remain in the City of Miami.

One of Covo's 2024 reelection opponents, Eddy Leal, penned a letter to her questioning the measure.

"The lack of apparent advantage to the City of Miami and its residents in your resolution is perplexing. In the public discussion, it was noted that the proposed legislation seemed to acknowledge the City’s fault in the legal proceedings," stated Leal, adding, " Your resolution also overlooked standard provisions such as mutual assumption of fees and costs, and the requirement for the former owner to sign a release, hold harmless, and indemnification agreement."
