President Donald Trump/ The Floridian
Although the Republican primary race is comprised of a deep pool of candidates, much of the conversation surrounds President Donald Trump (R). From his legal woes to his support, everything has been scrutinized, and one topic of discussion is the result of the 2020 election. Now a political rival, Vice President Mike Pence (R) believe Trump has put "himself over the Constitution" by not accepting the results.
President Trump hasn't changed his views on the 2020 election, arguing that the election was stolen from him and that his candidacy for the 2024 election is a response to the steal. Though many Republicans have shared the same belief, some are now speaking out against the president.
The relationship between Pence and Trump has soured in recent years. Both are now vying for the Republican nomination, and Pence is towing a fine line in being a candidate. First, he must distinguish himself from Trump while also championing the work of the Trump administration to convince voters for support.
During a recent NBC interview, Pence was asked about the 2020 election and what he thought about Trump's response.
"I always hoped [Trump would] come around on [accepting the election result] because I believe no one who puts himself over the Constitution should ever be president of the United States," Pence argued, making it clear that he believes Trump should not be making another run for the White House. In the same interview, Pence also avoided the question of whether or not he would pardon Trump if he were to become president.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who's also vying for the Republican nomination, has called on the rest of the primary candidates to pledge that, should they be elected president, they would pardon Trump on day one.
So far, none of the candidates have pledged to do so, but Miami Mayor Francis Suarez (R) has agreed to support Trump if he becomes the nominee.
